Hi, well just got back from another 9 day or so break fully braced up everything went well no problems whatsoever ,in fact it was so good I decided to go to the match this afternoon, instead of 2 Afo braced legs I would go for the Kafo on the left leg ,I had thought long and hard about the decision taking in consideration the terrace steps 14 in all rather deep then been confined for 100 minutes or more with the Kafo in the 90 degree angle but a bigger consideration was once I had done it there was no way back I would have to do it for every match from now on but I took the chance with just having had a international break and no home matches for the last two weeks and my closest fellow season ticket holders primed previously at the beginning for the season that things might change with my braces so when I turned up limping and with a stick there was no awkwardness apart from the bulkiness of the knee pad/knee joint showing quite clearly under my jeans when sitting was asked if I was moving to the disabled section but other than that things went okay-ish as I thought the steps were something different and had not experienced anything like it ,I had to single step every step foot by foot and it took what felt like ten minutes for 14 steps and holding people up etc and what felt like everyone was watching me I finally got to my seat , one thing I learnt today was get in earlier and leave late ,as to the sitting that was relatively easy but my left knee and toes and soles of feet were starting to go numb but with passing fans you had to keep standing up etc which eased the numbness but the getting up and down also caused problems as the locks on the Kafo were locking giving everyone around me a good look at me activating the release mechanism (which by the way gave me a buzz) only problem I nearly went arse over tit when we scored forgetting the locks and nearly toppled into the next row fortunately my neighbour saved me , but apart from that everything went well ,wearing the Kafo put a extra couple of hours on the day out but it’s all a new learning experience I can only get better at it I hope but having said that will have to rethink my strategy for the winter time ( oops hadn’t thought about that) anyway will cross that bridge when I come to it ,I have my appointment on Monday at the hospital then I’m off again on another ten days this Wednesday taking in the Southampton boat show then the Lincoln Campervan show and back home on the Friday then another home match ,looking good for full-timing I think will keep you posted

Great to see that its all going well. Wish i had the nerve to try an expedition out. I can generally picture the scene and, as you say, people probably dont take much notice (or perhaps they make sure that no one sees them taking any notice !!). However, its much more about how it feels, i suspect.
Regarding my own kafo, I would also like to make a couple of mods for a perfect fit. I think I need about 20mm more in the lower section (knee to foot) to ease upward pull on heel when sitting. Then I would really like to sed if its possible to add a removable iscial ring / seat to make it as weight-bearing as possible when i choose. Has anyone else done this?

Nice, have you had backstops before, when I first tried a set of boots with them it took a bit of getting used to with KAFOs on both legs as you can not lift yourself up a bit onto your toes. I also like when sitting down with my legs angled to the floor, my feet are kept from sitting flat.

Hi ,castmenow yes I’ve only ever worn boots fitted with backstop plates ,as I find they give the pretending a bit more credence as you state when sitting the feet aren’t flat,

Hi there Worn leg braces for over 60 years as a result of childhood polio. After all this time I still get a buzz when I get new ones. After many years of braces kind of being a taboo topic I am more than willing to share experiences or chat to anyone who would like to know more about the real thing. Always always have the metal and leather They may be heavy but they are strong and reliable Had thermoplastic just once Not supportive enough for me and caused awful skin irritation Today I am wearing my old metal and thermoplastic caliper. The only shoes I have with round sockets needed repairing which I did this morning. The thermoplastic shell on the lower leg is no longer a good fit. I wanted to put old clothes and footwear on because I had some painting to do. If ij or anyone else has experience of using bilateral KAFOs I would be glad to hear from them. What practical problems are there in doing everyday things? Is it necessary to use crutches or a wheelchair? Can you get around without them? Somewhere on the forum there is an account of a young man going home from work with KAFOs on both legs and no other support, which proves it can be done. What do people think?
