Whilst thinking about braces / bracing recently and realised that I had a slight interest in orthodontic braces / retainers.
I think this stems from my girlfriend having braces and retainers in the past.
But it made me wonder, Has anyone else has an interest in orthodontic bracing?

Certainly, yes. Have had both interests as far back as I can remember. Particularly removable braces. I can remember seeing others at school with them, being fascinated and wondering what they would feel like. Like leg braces, I experimented but never thought I would get them myself. I think I needed them really but no one ever thought to notice or say anything. I finally found a way to get some made, quite a few years ago.

I am also interested in orthodontics but I have never followed it up, it has always been secondary to casting and orthopaedic bracing. I keep thinking about getting some made by the German company that has a website Braces Shop.

No, I do not share your interest in orthodontic braces. I had to wear them as a teenager and I hated it. The large lump of plastic in the roof of my mouth my is difficult to swallow initially. I went back to the orthodontist every couple of weeks for eighteen months for adjustments. Finally when my treatment was finished and I was able to dispose of the plate, the roof of my mouth felt quite rough and my mouth felt enormous. I was glad to be rid of it.

It is probably the same for orthopaedic bracing, I want to wear a Milwaukee brace, and if I get the chance I will really enjoy it, I fully enjoyed wearing a CTLSO I has years ago. But if you asked someone who had to wear a Milwaukee brace all day, every day throughout most of their teenage years they would hate it with a vengeance.

Quite right. Although I really wanted braces (removable retainers) from an early age, and secretly wanted someone to suggest that they may be necessary, I think I would have disliked the way my parents would have then enforced the rules. (The embarrassment factor !). if I could have had them by choice, I think I would have been very happy, but would not have admitted it of course. When I did get them made much, much later, through choice and no need at all, I decided straight away that I was going to wear them immediately and continuously. The learning process, the occasional reminders that they are there and the occasions that I have completely forgotten that I am wearing them are all part of the experience. I have some with a front wire and some without, so I can choose and they are not always visible to others.
By the way castmenow, yes, the braces shop is the way to go. I got mine elsewhere before I found the braces shop but I would go for it. Their work looks very good.

I've also looked at the Braces shop but never went through with it. Possibly I have not idea on what I want / want to experience.
One day something might happen.

In general I tend to think its best to go for something quite simple. That way you can wear it when you are out and about without being 'over the top'. Most people take very little notice anyway as braces and retainers are fairly common so if you aim would be to get some feeling of the 'real experience' and wear it quite often, or full time, then start simple. You could always get something more elaborate later !

I do agree with starting off with something simple and similar thoughts have crossed my mind. However, one of the biggest reasons why I have not gone ahead with it is that I'm not entirely sure what my girlfriend will think about it. Even though she seems to be accepting the fact I want to get a pair of AFO's again, I don#t know if any form of orthodontics on top will take it too far for her.

I suppose age is a factor (?) but do you think its possible that the dentist may have suggested that 'a little bit of adjustment would improve your bite' or something along those lines ? it would need a little bit of planning but quite feasible.
I have a perfectly acceptable reason ready if anyone were ever to ask me.
As a matter of fact, I have always worn ones which dont show when there is a chance of being around anyone I know and more normal 'Hawley' retainers with wires at other times, but I very nearly forgot to swap over on my way to see friends once. (I have worn one for so long that I can easily forget at times). That very nearly put me in the position of having to explain. I do suspect, however, that no one would have taken much notice, or at least would not have mentioned it ! It helps that I am not particularly interested in permanent-looking full metal braces as once they were spotted, they would have to stay in ! Removable retainers are much easier to explain away.

For me, Dentists never mentioned / suggested I needed any form of correction. So never had a opportunity.

I understand you. It's always fascinating to see the transformation that they can bring to a person's smile. My sister also had braces and retainers, so I understand where your interest might stem from. It's nice to see that more people are taking an interest in this field. However, it is also important to not just have braces because you like the way it looks. Sometimes they are unnecessary. I suggest discovering it with the help of do i need braces quiz to be sure you need to consider this option
