Did any one else deal with Bob of FLB. He was top notch and provided the real appliances others in the U.S. could not. I know he has discontinued his service. I suspect he was a practicing orthotist and did a great service as a side business. It was he to whom I sent metal bands to be covered before I made my first attempt to present myself in public. He supplied the 4 covered bands, a 5 buckel kneepad, and a pair of t-straps for the ankles. It was very fine work and gave hours of experience.

I had looked at FLB over the years but by time I finally got the go ahead from my wife to buy some braces FLB had closed down. Yes, like Vintage Braces Bob had access to the real deal for his customers. However, in the end, even if FLB was still around at the time I would have stayed with a UK source. There are subtle differences between the US and UK braces, especially our predominant use of spurs and round sockets without ankle joints and if anything I wanted something that was very much like my memories of what I saw in the 60s as a child. Even when Bob had supplied braces with round spurs and sockets, they were different to the UK versions. This is not disrespecting Bob's work, what he supplied was top quality from all the pictures seen, but just different styles. I also like being casted and given the choice I would always prefer a plaster cast rather than the more modern fibre glass, because plaster is what I grew up with.

I too wanted what I had envied others got to wear and use in the late 50/early 60s as I was a child. There were so many choices in ankle joints and shoe attachment here during that time. It seemed many made at Warm Springs used the pin and socket. I understand that the simplicity of that design was premier but did not have the pivot point aligned at the anatomical ankle pivot point. That misalignment created a movement of the lower brace structure forward and backward as the ankle rotated That caused increased and decreased pressure at the back of the calf cuff contact point. For many, that was no problem. It was also very easy to change the footwear with the pin and socket compared with the solid stirrup attached to the heel of the shoe and bolted to the brace upright at the ankle joint. Yes there were/are subtle differences but the affects they left on our youthful years was pretty much the same.

Yes. Similar feelings here. it had puzzled me that the traditional braces here in the UK did not have an ankle hinge as such and just relied on the pin into a round socket in the shoe heel. The engineer in me says this is wrong. However I suppose I am the same as Castmenow, in that I wanted to have something which was the same as the ones which I saw all those years ago. Simple but technically incorrect. On the other hand, I would also like to have a pair with the foot held ridgid, ie. no ankle flex. A bit more restrictive of course, but with very long braces perhaps with iscial rings.......something draws me to that!

To some extent in the UK with the healthcare provision being state controlled as the NHS, I believe that cost has perhaps had a larger impact on the choice of treatment than in other countries and round pin and sockets are cheaper to make than hinges and more rugged hence needing less maintenance as well.

I got the pair of HKAFOs that I am wearing now from Bob. I spoke with him many times over the phone. He was very professional and I am very pleased with the quality and fit of my appliances. These are the 3rd paid of braces that I have had over the years, with the first 2 pairs being fit in person. The pair I got from Bob fit better than either of my previous pairs. He is missed !!!
