I've been a member of this Forum for some time and, until recently, have been a 'lurker' making very few posts of my own yet reading the others with interest. As some members will see, I've become a little more active recently as I now have a second hand KAFO which I wear as much as I can at home. Wearing it feels so right that I realise I've been missing out on something special for years. Hopefully VB will be getting some business in 2019 when I replace my current KAFO with a professionally made one.
Now to the point of this post. Today it is very rare to see anyone wearing a leather and steel brace and even those wearing more modern orthotics keep them well hidden under clothing, etc. Having known for a number of years now that there are others who wear braces without medical need and that we tend to be a very discrete bunch of people, I have often wondered whether I would ever come across another recreational user by chance. I have seen one male in the recent past who I'm pretty sure didn't need his leg brace (he was so confident and mobile) but there was no way I was going to approach him as I was not wearing mine (I didn't have one then) and I could easily have been wrong.
As this forum's members seem serious about their interest in braces and also seem to be a fairly sensible lot, I wondered whether a discrete badge / broach / lapel pin would be of interest to anyone. This could be worn whether the member was wearing their brace or not and it might be surprising how many of us there actually are out there quietly going about our daily lives. I have a suspicion that there are many more of us than we think - it fact I believe that a letter from a man wanting to tell his partner was published in the Sun newspaper's Agony Aunt column. Of course the story could be apocryphal and the internet site a spoof. I can't tell and am not a Sun reader.
We would have to get Vintage Braces' permission first but their logo looks ideal to me. It would easily translate into a small single colour raised logo. The sort of thing I had in mind was a gold-coloured semi-3D badge something like this one on E-Bay: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mens-lapel-pin-badge-Gold-finish/163426812076?hash=item260cff40ac:g:HeQAAOSw3pZa48uP:rk:11:pf:0 It would be very small, say about 5 mm diameter.
Firstly, if the Moderators are monitoring this would they even consider forumites using their logo?
Secondly, what do you as forum members think of the idea?
If we could get agreement on logo and had enough advance orders then I'd consider arranging for a batch to me made.
Of course, we'd need to think of a cover story for 'ordinary' people who asked what it meant - unless they wearing wearing a brace...................
