Not being able to wear KAFO in public very easily and anonymously, I have tried plastic AFOs that can be worn inside footwear. I have just spent all day in mine inside 14hole Dr Marten boots. They have felt great all day, quite restrictive, but enough flexibility to drive safely. No comments from anyone at home, shopping or at rehearsals. I must do it more often!

That is an interesting compromise. Did you get hot or sweaty at all with the plastic in close contact to your leg and foot for such a lengthy period.

Nothing like that occurred, I wore a thin pair of knee length socks, these act like a liner. Also the weather wasn't too hot.

Hi deejay I'm sure they're not! But they will do for now. Perhaps one day!

Hi guys,
Interesting chat about thermos plastic AFOs. Although I do have a set of traditional metal and leather KAFOs I also have a pair of thermos plastic AFOs sourced through that wonderful thing that is ebay. It did take a while with a hot air gun to get them to fit me but I use them a lot now, although I do find the plastic tends to stick to my skin a bit when I take them off but they are not big enough (or my claves aren't thin enough) to have socks all the way to the top. Although I agree that a full KAFO is brilliant as a wheelchair pretender I find the AFOs are a good compromise and are now part of my pretending most of the time. I rather like the way they hold my feet out which means they often bounce off the footrests on my wheelchair!
