Orthodontic braces have never appealed to me, quite the reverse in fact, but I know that others feel differently. Weird isn't it, how we get these apparently irrational interests that verge on obsession, while others cannot understand them at all!

I also like the idea of wearing orthodontic braces, I never had to as a child and I have not followed up on this, did not think of trying an orthodontist to make some on spec like I did with the leg braces. There used to be a company called the Recreational Braces Company in the UK years ago who were like VB, a real orthodontist that supplied the pretender business on the side, I should have followed through before they stopped, but it has always been a secondary interest for me. Funny you should mention orthodontic braces, I stumbled across this the other day 😁 www.bracesshop.net/oos/shop/?language=engwww.bracesforum.net

Yes. RBC apart from being a real lab making for the orthodontists, were suppliers for TV and film. Then the supply for 'enthusiasts' came after. The German supplier seems to be a little different but still supplies the enthusiasts.

When I was younger it was left-leg only, now it's both. The more the merrier!

I must admit that left leg would be more convenient as I would like to be able to drive whilst wearing it. But my left leg is the nicer of the two so I wouldn't want to do anything unnatural to it!

Mine match pretty well! I think the preference for the left has to do with the lad at school who wore one on his left leg, plus the despised teacher who had a very similar limp. My car is automatic so I could drive wearing a left one only but since I'm never likely to leave the house like that it's a moot point.

I hated it. at first I couldn't swallow or hardly speak. I had it for about 18 months. The relief I felt when I stopped wearing it for immense. My mouth felt enormous without the plastic plate in my upper jaw. Leg braces, kafos, call them what you like are a completely different matter.

They do look incredibly uncomfortable, yes. Like scaffolding for the teeth. I assume they’re usually just for aesthetic effect and not medically necessary?

As someone else said, its strange how different people find different things interesting. I have both. For me, it's a bit like KAFOs etc, it's not really for show to other people but rather the feeling of wearing them. I wore my plate solidly for about 5years and got used to it. In fact it was quite difficult to takt without it for a time. I don't wear it (or KAFOs) full time now but it still feels good when I do.

Are yu still exploring the reality of using a brace? There has been no disappointing incidents once the opportunity came forth.

They do look incredibly uncomfortable, yes. Like scaffolding for the teeth. I assume they’re usually just for aesthetic effect and not medically necessary? Yes and no. It's true that aesthetics are usually a big motivation behind orthodontic braces, but there are also many cases where correcting one's teeth/bite makes sense from a medical perspective (although "necessary" is of course difficult to define precisely). When teeth are badly misaligned, or even if they are relatively straight but there is a discrepancy in the size or position of the upper and lower jaws, it means that the teeth don't meet the way they are supposed to when one bites down. And that can cause excessive wear to the teeth, difficulty chewing, or headaches/TMJ problems. I'm actually in a situation right now myself where I'm looking into orthodontic treatment due to bite problems (deep overbite, i.e., excessive overlap of front teeth) that are causing tooth/gum damage. I have to admit that I also have a thing for orthodontic braces -- not just back and leg braces -- so I'm probably more willing to consider such an option than many others would be.
As far as comfort -- I gather one gets used to it, but some appliances are always going to be more unpleasant than others. Even with my predilections, I suspect I would very much not enjoy any bulky appliances that cover the palate and interfere with swallowing/speaking.
When I was younger it was left-leg only, now it's both. The more the merrier! Odd things, these preferences, aren't they? I prefer both legs, but if only one leg is braced or the bracing is asymmetrical (say, 1 AFO and 1 KAFO), then the right leg needs to be more heavily braced. I don't drive, so car-related practical aspects have never been a factor.
