rmar and catmenow, Someone at Crispin Orthotics knows how to make metal and leather calipers. I have two of them. The one I am wearing now (which has recently had an ischial ring added) fits the profile of my leg very well. It is shiny metal with beige leather straps. Surely there must be craftsmen around, proud enough of their skills to want to continue practising them. In addition there must be legbracers who either, like me, need such braces as these to avoid pressure on surfaces which are sensitive to pressure like my shin and thigh, or who just prefer the feel and look of them.

I remember having the ischael ring top braces as a youngster but cannot remember how they felt to wear other than they dug into my thigh when I was sitting My orthotist has refused to supply them now Anyone got any memories of these? Guess Ill just have to continue with my usual KAFO's

These are sometimes called Scott-Craig braces. I often find it comfortable to lean back when wearing my single caliper. So it would suit me to try braces like these. On the other hand I am glad to wear one brace and be less encumbered and more active, not too disabled but just enough! .

In answer to the question of what braces I would like to try / experience is a HKAFO of some sort.
As a person who has only had experience with AFO's, I have had a thought or two in the past wondering what it would be like to wear & use such setup.

Thanks Bruce Bruce, If you are logged in you should be able to click on the thumbnails of any of my pics to get a larger image and what pops up is the largest version of the image I have. With me, the images appear in a new tab, if you have some form of pop up blocker then you may not be seeing them, you may need to right click on the image and then choose open link in new tab to get around this.Castmenow.

If I had an HKAFO I would enjoy using it to do pushups. I do them in the morning without my KAFO on,and often in the evening with it on. I am more comfortable when doing them with my KAFO on and it would be even better to have both legs and waist supported by the HKAFO. (A major reason for going to a gym is "isolation", by which you avoid using muscles other than the ones you want to develop. This allows you to shape your body as you want- though it takes time and effort!)

I may have to try push ups next time I have my braces on in the HKAFO arrangement. I would never even have thought about this, but it would ensure use of arms and shoulders only.

Sounds like hard work to me! I find it a good work out just walking with a single-leg KAFO - up and down stairs particularly.
I like the thought of 'isolation' training though.

I have done that too. Walked up and down a flight of stairs with a single KAFO on my right leg. It is very tiring but you then know how it must feel to a person who wears for need, Brucd

Today I was remembering an incident in college. The school had a Disco that was about 2 floors down by stairs. One Fri. nite there was a girl in a very obvious steel and leather leg brace and 2 crutches trying to go down the stairs to this "Pub." She was with 2 g/f s who were helping her. She asked me if there was an elevator down. I went back down but could not get anyone's attention. I went back up and told her that I was sorry and unable to help her. I still feel a little bad about it since I didn't help. Also, if she went down, I could have talked to her and maybe there would have been some connection there. Then I would be living with one with a leg brace to see all the time.

I enjoy wearing the KAFO with ischial ring on my right leg and having the small buildup on my left boot to ensure clearance when I walk. I would not want a KAFO on my left leg as it would seriously limit my mobility and my ability to do ordinary things like walking on uneven surfaces, using stairs and gardening. If I wore KAFOS on both legs I would use a wheelchair. I enjoy using crutches, so I would have them as an option, as I do now.
Ideally I would have a KAFO with ischial ring on my right leg plus a matching metal and leather AFO on my lower left leg.
